Bartica businessman dies in accident

A 19-year-old motorcyclist is in police custody following an accident on Saturday night at First Avenue, Bartica, Region Seven, which claimed the life of a 54-year-old businessman.

Dead is Premnauth Persaud of First Avenue and in custody is Eric David, a gold miner.

Police Headquarters reported that David was speeding on motorcycle CJ 5268 with pillion rider Phebeon Stanford, a 19-year-old of Carabese Hill, in a northern direction along the western carriageway of First Avenue at around 22:00hrs.

It is alleged that he lost control and collided with the businessman who was standing on the western parapet of the said road.

As a result of the collision, David, Stanford and Persaud fell onto the road surface and received injuries about their bodies.

David and Stanford were picked up in a conscious state while Persaud was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Bartica Hospital by the police.

The driver and pillion rider were seen and examined by a doctor on duty and sent away while Persaud was pronounced dead. The motorcycle was lodged to be examined by the licensing and certifying officer.

A breath alcohol test was conducted on the driver of the motorcycle and no trace of alcohol was found in his system. Persaud’s body is at the Bartica Regional Hospital’s morgue awaiting an autopsy.
