The Guyana Fire Service is reporting a recent spike in prank calls coming out of the Blairmont, West Coast Berbice area.

The Fire Service, in a statement, revealed that based on reports from the Onverwagt Fire Station, perpetrators are calling at a specific time during the day and giving false information regarding fires in the area.

“[The] Guyana Fire Service is not taking these offenses lightly and once identified, perpetrators will face the full brunt of the law,” the statement noted.

While the Fire Service is mandated to respond to all fire reports, prank calls are especially dangerous because they allow for the wasting of valuable time and resources.

The Fire Service said prank calls can also hinder firefighters from effectively responding to actual fires that threaten a loss of life and/or property.

Citizens are urged to desist from making prank calls and false reports.
