A 56-year-old man who jumped over the concrete median at the centre of the Bagotstown Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Tuesday was struck down by a truck and subsequently died at the scene.

Dead is Mohan Toolsie of Coverden, EBD.

Police headquarters reported that the accident occurred at 07:45hrs as Toolsie attempted to cross from the eastern to western side of the road.

According to the police report, the truck (GZZ 1233) was proceeding north along the eastern carriageway when Toolsie disembarked from a pickup which was parked on the eastern carriageway and attempted to cross the road.

He reportedly jumped over the concrete median at the centre of both carriageways and ended up in the path of the truck which was at the time being driven by a 25-year-old male of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

Police said the driver applied brakes and attempted to avoid a collision, but due to the short distance, he collided with the victim.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver and no trace of alcohol was detected; he remains in custody as investigations continue.

Toolsie’s body was escorted to the Sandy’s Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy.
