Police are searching for a 55-year-old businessman of Harlem, West Coast Demerara who accidentally discharged his firearm and damaged a $1.3 million scanner located at the Guyana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Camp Street, Georgetown office.
The incident occurred at about 15:43 hrs on Wednesday. A report from the police on Thursday noted that the businessman visited the GRA office to conduct transactions and lodged his firearm at the security hut.
Police said the businessman retrieved his firearm after completing his business and while inserting his magazine into the firearm, a round went off and struck the lower part on the northern side of the scanner which is situated in the guard hut.
According to the police report, after the round hit the scanner, the businessman exited the guard hut and went away.
“Efforts to contact the businessman have been unsuccessful thus far. Investigations are in progress,” the police report noted.
