Drunk driver crashes into car driven by boy, 14

Police have arrested 25-year-old Surendranauth Gopaul of Auchlyne Estate, Corentyne Berbice after he crashed into a car driven by 14-year-old Kyree Anderson on the Fyrish Public Road on Wednesday night.

The child was driving without a license given the fact that the legal age to obtain a driver’s license in Guyana is 16.

Police Headquarters reported that Gopaul was driving under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred at about 23:10hrs.

The teenager of No. 1 Public Road, Corentyne is set to undergo surgery for injuries he sustained in the accident. He is currently admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

According to the police report, Gopaul was driving motorcar PXX 350 west on the southern side of the road when he crashed into the rear of motorcar PNN 9096 being driven by the teen.

As a result, the teen lost control and crashed into a light pole. He was taken out of the vehicle in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens and transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to the GPHC.

Police said both vehicles will be examined by a Licensing and Certifying Officer. Investigations are ongoing.
