Speeding minibus crashes into car, grader at Uitvlugt; several injured

Several people were injured after a speeding minibus lost control while overtaking a car along the Uitvlugt Public Road on the West Coast of Demerara (WCD) on Thursday morning.

The accident occurred at about 08:15hrs and also involved an unregistered grader, Police Headquarters reported.

The minibus driver has been identified as Troydon Carrington, 37, of Hague, WCD, while the driver of the car has been identified as 48-year-old Sharaz Wahab of Ocean View, Uitvlugt.

The grader was being driven by Rajnarine Persaud, 45, of Philadelphia, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

Police stated that the bus conductor, Oltan Francis, 34, of Vergenoegen, EBE and several passengers received injuries.

They were assisted by public-spirited citizens to the Leonora Cottage Hospital and subsequently transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

One of the passengers, Tiffany Harry-Peters, was later referred to Public Hospital Georgetown for further treatment.

The grader involved in the accident

Police revealed that the grader was proceeding east along the road while the car was heading in the same direction some distance behind; it is alleged that the speeding minibus attempted to overtake the car, but ended up colliding with the front right side of the car and lost control and crashed into the rear of the grader.

Police said breathalyzer tests were conducted on the driver of the car and Grader and no trace of alcohol was found.

Investigations are ongoing.
