One dead, another arrested after fracas between Rupununi farmers

Cedric Jones, a 59-year-old farmer of Bashaizon, Deep South Rupununi, died on Friday last after he got into an argument and physical encounter with a 27-year-old who is also a farmer from the same area.

The incident occurred at about 17:20hrs at Bashaizon and investigations revealed that the deceased and the perpetrator are known to each other.

On Friday, the perpetrator was consuming ‘local pine wine’ when Jones who was passing, stopped and spoke with him.

Police said they got into an argument, allegedly over the fact that Jones’ animals would go into the perpetrator’s yard.

The man reportedly pushed Jones to the ground and kicked him several times, causing him to receive injuries and he became motionless.

Police said when the man was arrested, he admitted to the crime.

Jones’ body was examined by a crime scene rank and photographed. It was then escorted to the Lethem Regional Hospital and later placed at the Lethem Regional Hospital’s Mortuary where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
