Police are on the hunt for a 23-year-old taxi driver who reportedly faked his kidnapping after he ran away from the police in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and abandoned his car with a large amount of marijuana inside.

The person he was transporting the cannabis for at the time demanded that he (taxi driver) pay him $1M for his losses, “hence, he (taxi driver) allegedly conspired with others to fake his kidnapping,” Police Headquarters reported on Saturday.

The incident with the police occurred on April 22, 2022, and the marijuana was seized but the driver’s 21-year-old fiancée of Essex Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice, reported to the police on Saturday afternoon (May 7) that she received photos from her fiancé’s phone showing him on a bed with his hands and feet bound with a yellow rope.

The young woman claimed that on May 5, her fiancé left home at around 07:50hrs to drop a passenger she knows as ‘Buckboy’ to Georgetown and at around 21:45hrs, she called him.

Then, he told her that he was at Weldaad, West Coast Berbice and that he had to turn back to make a pick up at Bath Settlement. That was the last she heard from him.

According to the woman, at about 01:30 hrs on Friday, her landline phone rang and a male voice at the other end told her he had his ‘stuff’ (narcotics) in her fiancé’s car and that he wants $1 million for it, or else “she will find his body at the road corner.”

“The woman said she told the male caller that she does not have that amount of money. She requested to speak to her fiancé but the person ended the call,” the police report noted.

On Saturday, she received the photos of her fiancé and some text messages demanding $500,000.

“She told investigators she was also warned against making contact with the police or it will be worst. The passenger (‘Buckboy’) who was in the car with the taxi driver is currently in custody being interrogated,” the police statement noted.
