After one year on the run, Mazaruni Prison escapee recaptured

Police in Region Eight (Potaro – Sipuruni) have managed to recapture a high-profile convicted prisoner who escaped from the Mazaruni Prison more than one year ago and has been on the run since.

According to a statement from Police Headquarters, Commander for Regional Division No. Eight, Senior Superintendent Michael Kingston confirmed that Samuel Gouveia was arrested at the Mahdia District Hospital where he was attempting to seek medical attention.

Gouveia was reportedly stabbed to his neck after getting into a heated argument with an identifiable male over money at approximately 23:30hrs at Mowasie Landing, Konawaruk, police headquarters reported.

He was escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital as a patient where he is presently under police guard.

Police reported that Gouveia was positively identified by a Prison Officer, as well as by records and tattoos to his left hand and that investigations in the matter are ongoing.

Gouveia was convicted for manslaughter and sentenced to 18 years, 9 months imprisonment for the killing of miner Santee Solomon who was fatally stabbed on November 23, 2015 at Puruni Landing.

Solomon, 35, of Line Path, Skeldon and Nurney, Corentyne was working in the interior with Bacchus International Gold Mines when he was fatally attacked.
