Mahaicony fatal accident: Teen driver in custody, couple unconscious

A 19-year-old driver who was involved in a fatal three-vehicle accident at Bushy Park, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara on Thursday is in police custody while a man and his wife from one of the vehicles are unconscious.

The teen driver has been identified as Jhatan Sukhlal. Police Headquarters revealed that he tested negative for alcohol on his breath.

The accident occurred at about 07:40hrs and resulted in the death of 25-year-old Nareshwar Arjune, a rice farmer and welder of Quakers Hall, Mahaicony.

Police said Arjune was driving motorcar PCC 5219; the couple was in motorcar HD 2859 which was being driven by the husband, 26-year-old Kevin Bagot and Sukhlal was driving a motor jeep (PJJ 8723).

According to the police report, Arjune was proceeding east along the Bushy Park Public Road while Sukhlal was driving behind him.

It is alleged that the teen driver collided with the rear of Arjune’s car, which caused him (Arjune) to lose control and crash head-on into Bagot’s car which was heading in the opposite direction.

According to the police report, Arjune along with Bagot and his wife were transported to the Mahaicony Public Hospital where Arjune was pronounced dead.

Bagot and his wife remain in an unconscious state at the same hospital.

Meanwhile, Arjune’s father, 58-year-old Seepersaud Arjune told the News Room that his son left home between 07:30hrs and 08:00hrs to make a pickup a short distance away.

At 08:30hrs, they received a telephone call that he was in an accident; when the family arrived at the scene, the young Arjune was already transported to a nearby hospital.

Seepersaud described the loss as a great one; the distraught man said his son was a helpful and jovial person who provided for the family.
