The left-hander displayed a mountain of concentration to face 259 balls thus far and would want to convert the start into a third century on day two.
Anthony Bramble, who hit the final two balls of the day for consecutive boundaries, is partnering him with a run-a-ball 21.
Also among the runs was Tevin Imlach, who in his third First-Class match, got his maiden half-century with a fighting knock of 53 after the Eagles were 20-1.
Chandrapaul Hemraj was the man to be dismissed at that stage in short and shot-filled innings of 19 (4x4s) from 20 balls.
Imlach, who had chances on seven and 38, faced 147 balls for his vital score in which he struck seven fours and shared a 94-run stand for the second wicket with Chanderpaul.
Leon Johnson, who gave a chance just before lunch, kept on the positive side until his opposite number, Kraigg Brathwaite, induced him into a false shot to cover.
He fell for 37 (6x4s) from 77 balls after a 58-run stand with Chanderpaul.
Debutant pacer Akeem Jordan has taken 2-50 while Raymon Reifer and Brathwaite both have a wicket to their name.
Earlier, Vishaul Singh was left out due to being unwell and pacer Demetri Cameron got a debut.
