The Guyana Ex-Athletes and Friends Inc. will host their seventh Independence road races event on Sunday, and as usual, there would be several attractive prizes up for grabs
The annual race is an attempt to reward, encourage and bring more athletes into the sport and the Eve Leary Sports Club will be the start of some of the races but the ending for all.
Thus far, close to 150 have registered for the one-mile, 5k, and 10k races.
The one mile is for Under-9 and Under-12 athletes, and prizes will be given to finishers from first to 12th in any junior race, according to Burgette Williams-Forde, President of the Guyana Ex-Athletes and Friends Inc.
Bicycles and Tablets will be provided for the overall junior male and female athletes while for the senior athletes, the first overall prize for the male would be a 43-inch flat-screen television and the female would get a 40-inch TV along with the $55,000.
Athletics Guyana is offering technical support and they are asking spectators to abide by the rules and not infringe on the race route.
President Aubrey Hutson indicated, “I think, together, we were able to put together what we deemed to be a very great race coming Sunday. We know we have the experience. Please encourage the fans and athletes, somebody, to come out and witness a properly- organised and executed event.”
Additionally, the group will be offering support to the Guyana Veterans Association where they will be donating medical supplies.
