For the first time ever, the Independence flag-raising ceremony, a staple part of Guyana’s Independence Day celebrations, will be held at the Damon Square in Anna Regina, Region Two, on the Essequibo Coast.
“This year’s ceremony will be historically held for the first time out of the capital city of Georgetown,” a notice from the Department of Public Information (DPI) stated on Friday.
On May 26, this year, Guyana will commemorate 56 years of independence from British rule.
According to DPI, a ‘National Pride’ event will commence 23:00 hrs on May 25 and as customary, Guyana’s national flag, the Golden Arrowhead, will be hoisted at midnight.
Last year’s main event was held at the Umana Yana in Georgetown.
