Woman, 65, dies after falling into path of garbage truck

A 65-year-old woman of ‘B’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown died after she reportedly fell into the path of a Puran Brothers Garbage Truck on Thursday.

Dead is Yvonne Morrison. Police Headquarters reported that the accident occurred at about 11:30hrs along the ‘B’ Field, Sophia Road.

The truck was being driven by 45-year-old Tulsiedas Sugrim of Leonora Pasture, West Coast Demerara.

According to the police report, Morrison was walking in front of the garbage truck which was proceeding in a western direction; Sugrim claimed that he sounded the truck horn and Morrison stopped and allowed him to pass.

“As the truck proceeded forward, it was further alleged that the pedestrian lost her balance and fell onto the road surface and under the said garbage truck where the left rear wheel ‘squeezed’ her,” the police stated.

Police said the porters immediately signalled to the driver to stop and the woman was picked up in a semi-conscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. She died at around 14:30hrs while receiving treatment.

A breathalyser test conducted on the driver found no trace of alcohol, however, police said a notice of intended prosecution was served.

Meanwhile, police said CCTV footage in the area will also be reviewed.
