Berbice females beat Demerara to win Inter-county ‘double’

Berbice defeated Demerara by seven wickets to win the Guyana Cricket Board’s Female Inter-county 50-over competition, thereby completing the ‘double’ after their success in the preceding T20 tournament.

In a rain-affected contest at the National Stadium, Providence, Berbice emerged with a seven-wicket victory after being set a revised target.

Batting first, Demerara posted 96-9 from 26.2 overs, which represented a massive collapse from 56-0 in 14 overs.

Shabika Gajnabi was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament for her 173 runs and five wickets

Lashana Toussaint topscored with 37 not out (76 balls; 6x4s), while fellow opener Mandy Mangru made 30 (42 balls; 5x4s). Bowling for Berbice, Shenata Grimmond took 3-6 off three overs, while Shabika Gajnabi picked up 2-21 off seven.

Player-of-the-Match Gajnabi returned to topscore with an unbeaten 44 off 34 balls (8x4s) and Grimmond made 22 off 11 (3x4s) as Berbice got to their revised target at 93-3 after 12.3 overs.

Cherry-Ann Fraser played a hand in all three dismissals, effecting a run out and picking up 2-32 off six overs.

Gajnabi was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament for her 173 runs and five wickets; Berbician Katana Mentore took the award for the most runs (198), while Heema Singh of Demerara picked up the most wickets (7).

It is from these tournaments that the Guyana team will selected to participate in the upcoming Cricket West Indies’ CG Insurance Super50 Cup and T20 Blaze, to be hosted in Guyana.

The CG Insurance Super50 Cup matches will be played at three venues- Everest Cricket Club, Enmore Cricket Ground and the Guyana National Stadium- from June 7 to 17. The T20 Blaze event will feature five full days of entertainment for the fans from June 19 to 25.

There will be three matches per day, starting at 10:00h, 14:30h and 19:00h under lights at the Guyana National Stadium.

For this year’s CG Insurance Super50 and the T20 Blaze several world-class players will be representing their home territories in what promises to be a keenly contested three weeks of action.
