The investigation into the fire at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on May 16 has found that it was electrical in origin, Fire Chief (ag) Gregory Wickham confirmed to the News Room on Tuesday.

“The cause of the fire was electrical in nature,” Wickham said. When further questioned as to whether a faulty electrical outlet or an appliance caused the fire, the Fire Chief could not say.

The fire started just after 10:00hrs; the Fire Service was contacted after ranks observed smoke emanating from the western side of the building which houses the narcotic branch.

Police ranks managed to extinguish the blaze with basic firefighting training received by the Guyana Fire Service.

Wickham had commended the ranks and noted that training helped to keep the fire under control until the arrival of the Fire Service.

The damages and losses sustained in the fire were not provided.
