A 61-year-old fisherman was discovered dead at a koker in No. 65 Village, Region Six (East Berbice – Corentyne) on Wednesday.
The dead man has been identified as Baldeo Balram of No. 65 Village.
Regional Commander Boodnarine Persaud told the News Room that the body had no visible marks of violence and a post-mortem would be conducted soon.
According to the man’s niece, Amrita Hemraj, he left home around 08:00 hrs on Monday with a bag and a pillow; he was expected to head out to sea with other fisherfolk.
However, at approximately 14:30 hrs on Wednesday, the family received a call informing them that his body was found stuck in the mud at the koker; he was found by the sluice operator.
The niece recalled that they arrived at the location within 10 minutes and by that time efforts were being made to retrieve the body.
Hemraj said persons indicated to them that hours before he was found dead, Balram was seen sitting on the boat sometime around 11:00 hrs on Wednesday.
According to Commander Persaud, relatives mentioned that Balram suffered from occasional seizures.
His body is presently at Anthony’s Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy.
