Karan Mahadeo, a 67-year-old man from West Ruimveldt housing scheme, died on Saturday after a collision with a truck on Mandela Avenue on Saturday evening.

Police Headquarters reported that Mahadeo was riding an electric bike while a 24-year-old man was driving a motor lorry bearing the number plate GAB 8812 at about 18:10 hrs on Saturday.

The lorry was proceeding west along the northern lane of the southern carriageway of Mandela Avenue, while Mahadeo was proceeding north out of the John Fernandes access road.

The truck driver alleged that Mahadeo was riding into the path of his vehicle. As such, he applied brakes and swerved right to avoid colliding with Mahadeo. Even so, the left side, front portion of the lorry collided with the bike.

Resultantly, Mahadeo was thrown onto the road surface where he received injuries about his body. Later, he was pronounced dead by paramedics who arrived at the scene.

The man’s body was taken to the Memorial Gardens funeral home, awaiting an autopsy.

Meanwhile, a breathalyser test conducted on the trust driver showed no trace of alcohol. He is, however, in custody assisting with investigations.
