A firearm and other weapons were seized from patrons who attended the j’ouvert which started on Saturday night, at the National Park.
Police Headquarters stated that at around 02:30 hrs on Sunday, a police officer observed two men fighting outside the venue. When the officer approached the men, a handgun fell out from one of their pants.
That man was identified as a 26-year-old porter from Festival City, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
The officer subsequently picked up the firearm and observed it to be a .32 pistol with one .32 live ammunition in the chamber.
The man was told of the offence committed and arrested. He was then escorted to Alberttown Police Station and placed into custody. The firearm and ammunition were marked, sealed and lodged at the station.
Meanwhile, it was also noted that scissors, knives and improvised weapons were seized by police at the event, where scanners were used at the entrance.
The seizures come one day after the Guyana Police Force promised to improve security at entertainment events. On Friday night, gunshots were fired at a ‘Baderation’ dancehall concert held at the park; glass bottles were also hurled in the air and there were alleged robberies at the venue.
Police Headquarters said that investigations are in progress.
