Boat captain missing after collision in Mazaruni River

A 40-year-old man is missing after the boat he was in collided with another boat at Jawalla Village, located in the Upper Mazaruni River.

Fabian Sam was operating the 35-foot vessel with a 30-HP outboard engine when he collided with a 30-foot boat with a 15-HP outboard engine being captained by a 48-year-old man.

Police Headquarters reported that the incident occurred at about 17:45hrs on Saturday.

According to the report, Sam along with five occupants were approaching the confluence of the Mazaruni and Kukui Rivers, when the light from the other boat was observed approaching them head-on from the opposite direction.

“An occupant in Fabian Sam’s boat, Charles Hernandez, in an attempt to get the other boat to change direction, flashed his torchlight in a bid to avoid a collision, but to no avail,” the police stated.

Following the collision, Sam was thrown overboard while Hernandez was knocked unconscious.

Hernandez was transported to the Kamarang Hospital and later transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital.

Meanwhile, the 48-year-old captain is in police custody assisting with the investigation as the search continues for Sam.
