Victoria teenager drowns while trying to swim across Ekereku River

Nineteen-year-old Simon Jones of Victoria, East Coast Demerara, reportedly drowned while attempting to swim across the Ekereku River at Rock Landing located in the Upper Mazaruni River.

Police Headquarters reported that Jones was last seen alive at about 23:30hrs on Friday last when he tried to swim from the right bank of the Ekereku River to the left bank.

On Tuesday, at about 10:00hrs, three gold miners from the area discovered the teen’s body floating in the river.

“Police in the Division were informed, and subsequently retrieved the body,” the police reported.

At the time of this report, police said the body was awaiting transportation to be taken to Georgetown for an autopsy to be conducted.
