Fisherman’s body found floating in Mahaicony River
The Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation into the death of a fisherman whose body was found floating in the Mahaicony River on the East Coast Demerara.
Dead is 31-year-old Andrew Barnwell, a fisherman of Farm, Mahaicony; Police Headquarters reported that the body was found on June 2 at about 15:55hrs.
It was reported that Barnwell was last seen alive on Tuesday, May 31, at about 19:00 hrs with a 57-year-old fisherman of East Canje, Berbice (name provided). Police said they were consuming alcohol on a boat at the Central Mahaicony River.
Following the discovery, the 57-year-old fisherman told detectives that on the aforementioned date, at about 19:00 hours, Barnwell left him after they were done drinking, to sleep.
He said that Barnwell boarded another boat which was moored alongside the boat they were in.
According to him, on Wednesday, at about 01:30hrs, he was awakened by his boat rocking, and upon checking, he discovered it was untied. He then secured the boat before calling out for Barnwell. The fisherman said that Barnwell did not respond and so, he then made checks for him but it was futile.
He subsequently went back to sleep.
On Wednesday, the man asked Barnwell’s wife of his whereabouts and he was informed that the man had not been in contact with her since Tuesday.
He then went to the Mahaicony Police Station at around 08:00hrs where he made a report.
Police said marks of violence were not seen on the exposed parts of the body, which is now at the Bailey’s Funeral Parlour awaiting a post mortem examination.
