Police have arrested a man who was wanted for robbery and who reportedly shot at patrol ranks in ‘E’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown on Tuesday, resulting in the police vehicle crashing into a culvert.

Police Headquarters revealed that the suspect was on an XR motorcycle riding in the area and while the ranks attempted to stop him, he reportedly pulled out a firearm from the waist of his pants and discharged two rounds at the patrol vehicle. The incident occurred at about 14:30hrs.

“As a result, the driver of the police vehicle lost control and crashed into a culvert,” the police reported.

The ranks exited the vehicle and pursued the suspect who, in a bid to escape, hit a dog and fell off the motorcycle.

Police said following the incident, a ‘large hostile’ crowd gathered around the suspect during which he managed to escape initially.

The ranks had to discharge rounds in the air to disperse the crowd.

The suspect was later arrested at his home and is presently in police custody at the Brickdam Police Station.

The Guyana Police Force is once again appealing to members of the public to co-operate with members of the Force in the execution of their duties and to maintain law and order.
