Driver abandons car with $8M worth of ganja
The driver of a white Toyota Fielder Wagon (PAB 1884) reportedly abandoned the vehicle with 39.9 kg (87.9 pounds) of marijuana worth $8 million, the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) reported in a statement on Thursday.
According to CANU, officers were conducting an operation at Hope Bridge, East Coast Demerara on Wednesday and attempted to stop the fielder wagon, but the driver refused to stop, prompting the officers to give chase.
The officers pursued the vehicle into Haslington New Scheme, where the driver stopped and fled into nearby bushes. Officers attempted to apprehend the driver but were unsuccessful.
A search was conducted on the vehicle, which led to the discovery of several parcels of cannabis.
The vehicle and the narcotics were transported to CANU Headquarters.
Investigations are ongoing.
