Matthews leads Barbados to dominant victory over Leeward Islands

Defending champions Barbados inflicted a commanding nine-wicket defeat on the Leeward Islands on Thursday afternoon, as second round action in the Cricket West Indies CG United Women’s T20 Blaze continued at the National Stadium, Providence.

The Bajans were led by West Indies all-rounder Hayley Matthews, who followed up a superb bowling spell with an unbeaten knock to ensure they stayed top of the table.

Off-spinner Matthews picked up 3-9 off four overs, one of which was a maiden, as Leeward Islands were skittled out for 60 in 18.2 overs, a marginal improvement from the 56-7 they managed in the first round loss to the Windward Islands on Tuesday.

Leeward Islands were in early trouble, losing their first three wickets for just two runs, and then further slipping to 32-7. Shanika Bruce did the early damage with 3-15 off four overs.

Extras topscored with 18, while Rosalie Dolabaille made 14 not out off 44 balls and Tiffany Thorpe scored 10.

In reply, Barbados romped to victory at 61-1 in just 6.4 overs with Matthews unbeaten on 23 off 18 balls (3x4s).

Kyshona Knight made 15 not out, while her twin sister Kycia Knight was the only batter dismissed for 12.

Thorpe picked up 1-16. It was Barbados’ second victory in a row after defeating Guyana in the opening round on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the game between host Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago was completely washed out, with both teams having a fair share of the points.

Later on this evening, Jamaica will play Windward Islands from 19:00h.

In Round Three on Saturday, Barbados will play Windward Islands from 10:00h; Guyana and Jamaica go head to head from 14:30h; and Trinidad and Tobago and the Leeward Islands face off from 19:00h.

All matches are being played at the National Stadium, Providence.
