Super50: Matthews hits 99 as Barbados beat Windward Islands by 149 runs

The in-form Hayley Matthews missed out on a hundred, but Barbados started their defence of the Cricket West Indies CG United Women’s Super50 Cup in grand style at Providence on Thursday.

Opener Matthews was dismissed for 99 off 133 balls (8x4s) as Barbados put up 227-2 from the allotted 50 overs. Windward Islands replied with 78 all out in 23.1 overs to lose by 149 runs.

Matthews and Kycia Knight, who made 72, added 177 for the first wicket in 38 over to set up the Bajans’ winning total.

Windward Islands were in tatters early, crashing to 9-6 by the eighth over, before the last four wickets managed to score 69 runs.

The impressive Shanika Bruce claimed 4-48, Shamilia Connell 3-9 and Aaliyah Alleyne 2-14.

Super50 action continues on Friday at the same venue with Trinidad and Tobago versus Leeward Islands from 09:30h.
