Police have arrested Collin Providence, a resident of Ankerville, Port Mourant, Berbice, who attacked and severely chopped his neighbours on Wednesday night because they provided a statement to the police about him abusing his wife.

Forty-four-year-old Tilawatti Singh, also known as Angela was chopped twice to her left arm, her right leg, and hip, while her husband, who tried to save her from the attack, was also chopped.

At the time of the attack, Angela was in her hammock with her three-year-old granddaughter and was in conversation with Providence’s wife, who was also at the house.

The attacker wife’s managed to escape but Angela faced the brunt of the cutlass attack. Angela and her husband were rushed to the Port  Mourant Hospital but she was later transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital and subsequently released.

The incident reportedly stemmed from a report made to the police in March 2022; Providence’s wife had filed a report against him at the Whim Police Station and later obtained a restraining order.

The News Room understands that the woman would usually find comfort and seek guidance from Angela and it was Angela who backed up her story of abuse to the police.

Reports indicate that even though Providence was ordered to move out of the house, he breached the restraining order multiple times and even attempted to break into the house during which he threatened to kill his wife and her children.

The News Room understands that on the day of the chopping, the man accused Angela of providing evidence to the police against him and he also provided the name of the policeman who gave him that bit of information.

Investigations are ongoing.
