Weather permitting, this year’s Milo Schools Under-18 Boys Football Tournament, will kick off with eight scheduled matches over the weekend at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown.
The opening contest on Saturday at 12:30h pits Dolphin Secondary against St. John’s College followed by West Ruimveldt Secondary and Queen’s College from 14:00h.
From 15:30h, The Bishops’ High and Charlestown Secondary do battle then Bladen Hall and Carmel Secondary clash at 17:00h.
On Sunday, Ann’s Grove Secondary meets Uitvlugt Secondary in the first match of the day then a battle of neighbours in North Ruimveldt Secondary and East Ruimveldt Secondary from 14:00h.
Golden Grove Secondary and Buxton Secondary engage from 15:30h while the winner of match one and match three on Saturday, will faceoff to bring an end to the preliminary matches.
The tournament will continue to have 24 teams, but instead of the usual round-robin then knockout format, the latter alone will be applied for this season only, and seeding is based on the points standings at the time of curtailment in 2020.
According to the Co-Director of the Petra Organisation, Troy Mendonca, they have a commitment to continue the tournament and he firmly believes the players are eager to return to the field of play.
From the company perspective, they are elated to be back as an integral part of finding future national stars, according to Marketing Manager for Nestle (Guyana), Rajinda Lall.
The boys from Christianburg Wismar Secondary are the defending champions after they defeated Lodge Secondary 1-0 in April 2019, while Annandale Secondary trounced President’s College 5-0 to finish third.
The third-place playoff and final are slated for July 10.
$300,000 will be awarded to the tournament’s winner to go towards a school project. Second to fourth will cop $200,000, $100,000 and $75,000 respectively. There will be individual prizes for top performers.
