A 35-year-old computer technician was on Wednesday found guilty of raping a 12-year-old school girl in 2015.

Feroz Shakeer was on trial before Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Demerara High Court for engaging in sexual activity with the victim on December 3, 2015.

A 12-member jury, after deliberating for over two hours, found Shakeer guilty of the indictment on Wednesday afternoon.

The Judge deferred sentencing to July 15, 2022.

He was represented by attorneys-at-law George Thomas and Madan Kissoon while the State was represented by Cicelia Corbin.

The court heard that Shakeer worked as a taxi driver and on the day in question, he picked up four school-aged children, including the victim and her cousin from the G3 mall at Diamond, East Bank Demerara.

The court heard that Shakeer dropped one of the girls home, leaving the victim, her cousin, and the boy in his car.

Instead of dropping the victim and her cousin at their requested destination, Shakeer drove to a remote location in Diamond where he proceeded to rape the victim.

The matter was reported to the police station and Shakeer was later arrested.
