What started off as a peaceful protest at Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara turned into a fiery one on Tuesday morning as hundreds of residents blocked the roadway, lit debris on fire and prevented the free flow of traffic on the East Coast Corridor.

Residents are protesting the killing of 23-year-old Quindon Bacchus who was shot by a plainclothes policeman on June 10 at Haslington, ECD during an alleged undercover police operation.

The protest by the residents erupted after a facetious online outlet inaccurately reported that the cop, identified as Kristoff Denobrega, was released from police custody.

The protest has since expanded to several East Coast Demerara villages, including Enmore, Lusignan, Good Hope and Mon Repos and reports indicate that the protesters are marching their way to the capital Georgetown.

An Opposition APNU+AFC Member of Parliament is at the scene and during one of his live broadcasts of the protest, a resident can be heard clearly threatening to kill the country’s President.

The News Room understands that the riot police have since been dispatched to quell the protest.
