A car is suspected to have maliciously been set on fire at Hibiscus Avenue, AA Eccles, East Bank Demerara on Friday night.

The Guyana Fire Service said it received a call just after 20:00 hours and immediately responded to the location from its fire station in Eccles.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed a vehicle on fire and quickly sprang into action to extinguish the blaze.

Within minutes the fire was extinguished but the vehicle and its contents were destroyed.

The fire service said in a statement on Saturday that it suspects the fire may have been the result of a malicious act.

However, when questioned the owner/driver was uncooperative and refused to provide firefighters with information regarding the vehicle and the fire, highlighting that they had not called the fire station nor made the report.

As such, the matter was referred to the police for further investigation.

The Guyana Fire Service reminded that it is mandated to respond to all fire reports and is therefore appealing to citizens to cooperate with its ranks in providing the required information.

“All fires must be reported to the GFS, which is the sole agency with the responsibility for preventing and extinguishing fires within the country,” the statement added.
