Hinterland residents in Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine will benefit from a $750 million investment for full and partial housing subsidies, Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal announced at the ongoing National Toshaos Council Conference on Wednesday.

A statement on the ministry’s Facebook page noted that Minister Croal said the government is committed to improving the housing conditions in all hinterland and riverine communities; to increase access to affordable housing for indigenous peoples.

Unlike housing programmes on the coastland, the Minister explained that all costs are waived for beneficiaries.

As part of accountability and transparency measures, the village council and residents will identify the families who are most in need to benefit from this programme.

For each housing unit, the Ministry will employ two skilled persons, while the beneficiaries will provide three additional workers. Additionally, materials will be sourced from the benefiting communities as far as possible.
