Ex-soldier remanded for attempting to murder girlfriend

A 26-year-old former member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), who reportedly stabbed his girlfriend, was on Thursday remanded to prison on an attempted murder charge

James Rodwell Cadogan, known as “Roddie” of Haslington, East Coast Demerara, appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court and was not required to plead to the charge.

The charge read that Cadogan, on July 5 at Paradise, ECD, with intent to commit murder, wounded 24-year-old Zenida April, who is a serving member of the GDF.

He was remanded to prison until September 19, 2022.

According to reports, Cadogan and April lived together at Paradise. It is alleged that on Monday, July 4, the couple had a misunderstanding during which Cadogan threatened to kill her.

The victim then left and went to her mother’s home. The next day, April, her mother, and other relatives went to the house to collect her belongings.

Cadogan was at home and allowed them in. As the victim proceeded to the bedroom to pack her stuff, Cadogan allegedly attacked her and stabbed her seven times with a knife.

The victim’s mother was also injured by Cadogan.

It is alleged that Codogan escaped while the victim and her mother were rushed to the Hospital. The victim is still hospitalised.

On July 11, Cadogan was arrested by police and charged.
