Significant housing relief will be provided over the next nine months as the government plans to distribute another 5,000 houselots along the East Coast of Demerara (ECD), Housing Minister Collin Croal announced on Sunday.

Croal, while speaking at the opening of a new multi-million dollar hardware store at Enmore ECD, assured Guyanese that the government was intent on providing housing relief.

As part of these plans, he said that the government would continue finding new lands to develop and distribute house lots to people.

Already, Croal said about 4,700 house lots were distributed across the East Coast over the past 18 months.

It was earlier reported that those lots were allocated at La Bonne Intention (LBI), Mon Repos, La Reconnaissance, Annandale, Vigilance, Strathspey and Bladen Hall.

Meanwhile, in all the coastland regions, the minister also highlighted, a total of 11,700 lots have been allocated.

Complementing the distribution of the house lots, there have been investments in infrastructure works leading to the correlation or rehabilitation of roads, bridges, drains and other utilities.

On Saturday, during an outreach at Chateau Margot ECD, Croal said that the ministry will be seeking more funds to develop schemes under its purview. Additionally, the ministry is in the process of acquiring lands for new housing developments from the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC) and the Guyana Sugar Incorporated (GuySuCo).

This is expected to bring major relief to applicants in the ministry’s existing backlog.
