Cop loses eye after assaulted by driver with brick

Police Lance Corporal 33-year-old Rickland Edmundson who was injured after he was assaulted by a driver and his family will no longer be able to see from his right eye.

Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Siwnarine told the News Room via telephone on Friday that the cop will undergo surgery to remove the eye.

“The entire eye… because it will shrink over time it has to come out.”

Siwnarine said, “over a period of time they will have to put in a false eye.”  He could not confirm is efforts have been made for surgery to be done overseas.

Canter driver, 22-year-old Daniel Singh known as ‘Anand’ was Wednesday charged with felonious wounding and granted bail in the sum of $400, 000.

He is accused of pelting Edmundson with a brick after he refused to stop his vehicle and instead had to be pursued by the cop to his home at Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara.

When the officer stopped Singh, he asked him to produce his licence and other documents but Singh, reportedly, drove away.

According to the police, when the officer attempted to apprehend the driver, his father and sister reportedly held onto the officer.

Singh reportedly picked up a brick and threw it towards the officer, wounding him in the right eye.
