Two men, a 23-year-old businessman from Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown and a 26-year-old Personal Assistant from ‘B’ Field Sophia, Georgetown, were found with a firearm and ammunition in a car they were travelling in on Saturday.
Police headquarters reported that officers from Regional Division 4 ‘A’ were on mobile patrol near Agricola, East Bank Demerara (EBD), at around 16:30 hrs.
At the time, a black motorcar with the number plate PYY 2470 was driving past the village at a fast rate of speed. As such, the police officers chased after the vehicle and intercepted it at Albouystown, Georgetown.
According to the police, a search was conducted on the two men in the car. Nothing unlawful was found on their person. The car was then searched and the officers found a .32 pistol and six live .32 rounds in a magazine behind the driver’s seat.
Additionally, $311,700 in cash was found in a compartment in the vehicle near the steering wheel.
The men were told of the offences and escorted along with the firearm, ammunition, cash and motor car to the Brickdam Police Station, Georgetown. They are currently in custody.
Importantly, it was reported that the vehicle belongs to a businessman of High and Broad streets, Charlestown, Georgetown. Police have, however, been unable to locate him thus far.
Investigations are ongoing.
