Two years ago, on August 2, 2020, Guyana witnessed the ascension of His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who was sworn in as Guyana’s 9th Executive President. Whilst there was much to celebrate there has also been much to reflect. It is a fact that His Excellency had to wait for five bruising months to be sworn in simply because of naked and transparent attempts to alter the election results. This and dealing with personal misfortune, have all shaped the Presidency of Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali for the better.

Today, the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) and the entire Muslim community salutes and celebrate His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s second anniversary of his ascension of Office. This is a matter of pride and joy for all in our country.

Dr. Ali’s ascended to office at a time when the society was fractured, hopeless and pessimistic. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic was wreaking havoc globally resulting in almost six million deaths, loss of livelihood and disruption of global supply chains. Immediately, mechanisms were implemented to cushion the effects of the pandemic such as the provision of vaccine, cash grants and assistance to small and medium size enterprises.

But while we are hopeful that eventually the pandemic will wither away, the nation was confronted with ongoing and equally pernicious threat of Climate change which resulted in massive flood along the coast of Guyana that saw damages to the effect of almost USD$1 Billion. Again, the leadership was on display bring immediate relief to those who were affected.

The war in Ukraine has seen global market prices soaring, some nations being on the brink of famine due to rising food prices and disruption of global supply chains. Whilst these events have setback development, under the leadership of His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, Guyana continues to forge ahead on its developmental trajectory.

Today our nation is brimming with hope and optimism towards building a “One Guyana” which will be achieved by the permission of God.

His Excellency’s ascension to office was a victory but he was not triumphalist, in fact he immediately went about looking after the affairs of the state and healing the nation. Today, his tenure in office so far has so far shown a strong vision for Guyana’s future, effective communication, selflessness, character and integrity. These are the hallmarks of great leadership and His Excellency has ticked off all of them.

One of the most enduring characteristics of His Excellency Dr. Ali is His ability to interact seamlessly across the entire spectrum of society regardless of class, religion, or race and it comes naturally to him. This is a man who came from humble beginnings, achieved greatness but never once lost the common touch. This is what inspirational leadership is all about, building the confidence of the people and involving them in the development of our country.

His Excellency has continued to prioritize human capital development. There has been tremendous improvement in health care delivery system, education, workers welfare among others.

His Excellency, through his One Guyana vision has deployed an effective mechanism for sustained religious and ethnic harmony, initiated programmes, policies and projects with direct bearing on the lives of our citizens and without mincing words, leaving no doubt that our country  is undergoing a seismic shift in its socio economic development.  He has reengineered the hearts and minds of our nation towards a higher calling.

Today the Muslim Community celebrate the second anniversary of your ascension to the Office of the President and we take this opportunity to remind you that it was God Almighty who placed the leadership of our nation on your shoulders and therefore it is a trust that has been given to you. In this regard, it is critical to be reminded of the narration from Abdullah Ibn Umar (RA) stated that the Messenger of Allah said: “Behold! Everyone is a guardian, and every one shall be asked about your subjects (Sahih Bukhari). Further, we implore you to continue to govern our country with Ihsaan, patience, humility.

May God continue to bless you so that you can continue to govern in a manner that is pleasing too him.

Today, we are all beaming with joy in celebrating your success and we stand resolutely in offering our unequivocal support in building a one Guyana for all
