Man accused of sexually assaulting woman who fell asleep at house party remanded

A 25-year-old labourer was Friday remanded to prison for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman after she fell asleep at a house party.

Deqwan Norton of Durban Backlands Squatting Area, Georgetown appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

He was not required to enter a plea to the charge which alleged that on August 07 at Durban Backlands, Georgetown he sexually penetrated a 29-year-old woman without her consent.

The matter was heard in private and Norton was remanded to prison until August 26.

According to the state’s case, the victim was at her friend’s house party and decided to stay over.

The woman stayed in her friend’s bedroom alone and fell asleep but was later awoken by someone touching her body.

It is alleged that it was Norton who then held the victim down and sexually assaulted her.

The victim raised an alarm and persons in the home came to her rescue.

It is alleged that Norton attempted to escape and was beaten and handed over to the police.

The victim positively identified Norton as her attacker.
