Bibi Shadick, Commissioner at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and a former Minister of Government, passed away at her East Street, Georgetown residence Saturday afternoon.

A Facebook post from the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) said Shadick passed away peacefully at about 15:00 hrs.

Shadick has been serving as one of the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) nominated Commissioners at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). She served as a Minister of Human Services and Social Security under a previous PPP administration.

She was also an educator and served previously as Pro-Chancellor at the University of Guyana. Shadick studied law.

The News Room understands that Shadick had been unwell for some time and was recently released from the hospital where she had been admitted.

Once the news of Shadick’s death was announced, condolences immediately started to pour in and flooded social media.

Among them was Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill who said “An Oak tree has fallen.”

“Her imprint on the development of our country is evident; ensuring democracy prevailed and that the will of the people was respected,” he added.

In another post, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand wrote, “Bibi Shadick was a beloved and revered educator known for teaching Mathematics well and changing lives long before she became a Lawyer, Minister and GECOM Commissioner.”
