Boy, 18, killed during street brawl at Parika

Eighteen-year-old Donald Gibson of Hyde Park, Parika, East Bank Essequibo died on Monday after being stabbed during a brawl by a 24-year-old male suspect who is in custody.

The incident occurred at about 17:30 hrs at Parika Facade, East Bank Essequibo.

Police Headquarters said in a statement that Gibson and the suspect were at a liquor restaurant at Parika Façade when Gibson accused the suspect of assaulting his friend sometime in the past.

An argument ensued and the Gibson allegedly assaulted the suspect physically before leaving the bar.

Police said the 24-year-old man subsequently left the bar and was again accosted by Gibson during an argument that led to a scuffle.

The suspect who was armed with a knife stabbed Gibson once under his left arm.

When this occurred, Gibson’s friend who was identified as 19-year-old Wazim Mohamed attempted to stop the fight but he was instead dragged into the scuffle.

The suspect stabbed Mohamed with the knife to his back and buttocks before the fight was quelled by public-spirited persons.

Immediately, the suspect rushed to a nearby trench and allegedly threw the knife into the trench.

The police were summoned and the injured teen was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he died while receiving medical attention.

Mohamed was later treated at the same hospital and is presently a patient.

The suspect was arrested and placed in custody.
