Batsman Shimron Hetmyer has been appointed captain of the Guyana Amazon Warriors for the Hero Caribbean Premier League 2022.

The 25-year-old, who has been with the Warriors since 2016, has played 47 matches for the franchise, scoring one hundred and eight fifties.

Hetmyer has shown leadership skills from his youth days, leading West Indies Under-19s to a historic first ICC Youth World Cup title in 2016.

“I’m really happy to be appointed captain of my country franchise. I’m excited to lead this group of men. I can’t wait for the CPL to begin.”

Head Coach of the franchise Rayon Griffith welcomed Hetmyer’s appointment, stating that he was happy to see the left-hander being given the opportunity to captain a senior franchise.

Hetmyer is the first Guyanese to captain the Warriors since Ramnaresh Sarwan in the inaugural tournament in 2013.

Chairman of the Guyana Amazon Warriors, Dr. Ranjisinghi ‘Bobby’ Ramroop, said: “We are pleased to appoint our first Guyanese captain since the 2013 season. Hetmyer has been a main part of our set-up over the years and we believe the time is right to have him lead the team.”

The Hero CPL 2022 will bowl off on August 31 and conclude on September 30.

Matches will be held in St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana. The knockout games and final will be hosted in Guyana for the first time.
