New regulations from the government state that a drivers’ permit is no longer needed to drive in Guyana once an individual possesses a valid driver’s licence issued by a competent authority in the traveller’s country of residence.

This new law is effective Friday, August 26, 2022.

The regulations, made under the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, state that a person not resident in Guyana shall be permitted to drive on a road for a period of 60 days after entry into Guyana without a driver’s licence as required by Section 23(1) of the Act.

The visitor must, however, be the holder of a valid driver’s licence issued by a competent authority in the country of residence. The individual must also possess documents that establish the date of entry to Guyana.

Previously, foreign nationals who were desirous of driving in Guyana would have been required to obtain a Drivers’ Permit. This permit was valid for one month and cost G$2000.

The foreign national would no longer be required to provide a valid driver’s license (issued elsewhere) and complete the application form.
