Nicolette Fernandes on the cusp of prestigious World Masters title
Guyana’s ‘Squash Queen’, Nicolette Fernandes, is one match away from potentially coping another prestigious title, this time at the ongoing World Masters Squash Championship in Poland.
Competing in the Women’s 35+ category, Fernandes will need a convincing victory over South African Slyoli Waters to cop the title.
Only three women are in the category, meaning it is contested on a round-robin basis.
Fernandes started her campaign with an 11-5, 9-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-5 win over Olga Kolářová of the Czech Republic.
On Friday, Kolářová defeated Walters 12-10, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5, which sets up the final between herself and Fernandes on Saturday.
Meanwhile, local squash extraordinaire Richard Chin lost to number-one seed, Derek Ryan of Ireland in the Men’s 50+ semi-final.
Competing at his third Masters tournament, Chin lost 3-11, 6-11, 4-11, and will now face Christian Borgvall of Sweden in the third-place playoff.
