Four men were on Friday remanded to prison for trafficking almost two kilograms of foreign marijuana. This type of cannabis is known as “Kush” and is suspected to have been imported into Guyana from North America.

The men are: Erwin Chappelle, 24; Doodnauth Bhagwandin, 35; Kevin Ramgoolam, 27; and Mark Barton, 29. They appeared before Magistrate Rushelle Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court, East Coast Demerara.

The quartet pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on September 1, at Middle Street, Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, they had 1.750kg of cannabis in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Magistrate Liverpool remanded the men to prison until September 20, 2022.

According to reports, on the day in question, the men were intercepted while in a motor vehicle by ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU).

The motor car was searched and almost four pounds of marijuana worth some $2.8 million was found inside.
