The family of Marc Melville, who went missing in August, believe the burnt remains of a human found at Yarrowkabra on the Soesdyke Linden Highway, are that of the missing man.

Police investigators launched a probe after burnt human remains were discovered on Sunday. The News Room understands that a few young boys from the area made the discovery and reported it to their parents who later contacted the police.

The remains were burnt beyond recognition and forensic investigators were called in. Several items including a watch, a knife and screw drivers were found near the body.

Marc, a 47-year-old welder of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, went missing on August 28. His mother, Avira Melville, told the News Room that the key and knife found at the scene belonged to her son. Avira said her son was reported as missing after several calls to his phone went unanswered and he did not return home. ,

“We confirm it by the keys that he had on him and the keys to open his bedroom door. The keys open the door,” the man’s mother said.

She explained,:“We were told they [the police] had a body that was burnt and they find this body on Sunday and they described that it had certain things on the body or on the spot the body was burned.

“The knife and so on we heard that they found, I said this got to be my son.”

Upon being told of the body, she was accompanied by her daughters to go the Diamond Police Station. There she said she recognised the knife belonging to Marc, which he kept in his bag at all times.

However, she said that the police told her because of the state the body is in, it is not definite that the body is Marc’s. The family was told by the police that they must await the results of a DNA test.

According to Avira, her son had seven children, one of which lives with her. She said the eight-year-old boy “is not taking it very lightly, you could see he is very disturbed.”

The News Room understands that investigators believe the person was killed elsewhere and then taken to the location and burnt. It appears as if the person was also stuffed inside a suitcase.

In addition to the items mentioned, a pair of black, gold and white Air Jordan sneakers was found attached to the right leg bone while part of the skull appeared to have a chop wound.
