Berbice man arrested with $13M worth of ganja
A Golden Fleece, West Coast Berbice man was on Tuesday arrested after 206 pounds of marijuana worth $13 million was found in the car he was driving.
The Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) in a statement said Tion Thompson, 31, attempted to evade ranks conducting an operation along the Cambridge, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara Public Road.
Thompson was driving a silver motor car with license plate PAB 2143 and reportedly drove away when asked to stop by the CANU officers.
As a result, the officers pursued the vehicle. Thompson, who was speeding, lost control and ended up in a canal.
CANU said Thompson was arrested while another occupant in the vehicle managed to escape in the nearby bushes.
A search of the car revealed seven salt bags containing several parcels of marijuana.
Investigations are ongoing.
