The highly-anticipated GuyOil/Tradewind Tankers Under-18 Schools football League will kick off on Sunday at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue and run until November 6.
Vying for top honours in the third edition will be Dolphin Secondary, North Ruimveldt Secondary, President’s College, West Ruimveldt Secondary, Golden Grove Secondary, Christianburg Secondary, Cummings Lodge Secondary and Friendship Secondary.
Following the march of the participating teams, the first game will kick off at 13:00h with North Ruimveldt against Cummings Lodge Secondary, followed by Wismar/Christianburg against West Ruimveldt, Golden Grove versus Friendship and Dolphin Secondary against President’s College.
Co-Director of the Petra Organisation, Troy Mendonca, expressed gratitude to GuyOil/Tradewind Tankers for their support in the form of sponsorship (worth $4.8 million), noting that the tournament is significant to the development of football at the grassroot level.
Mendonca underscored the importance of having a league format tournament, allowing teams more opportunities to sharpen their skills.
“Unfortunately, we will do one round (this year). Hopefully, come next year, we can be able to compete for two rounds,” Mendonca noted.
Each game will last 70 minutes, and matches will be played every Sunday, with the final on November 6.
The eight teams were drawn from the recently concluded Milo Schools Football tournament, another venture of the Organisation.
The teams will play each other once, at the end of which the school with the most points will be declared champion. A top prize of G$500,000 is at stake, while second will receive G$300,000, third G$200,000 and fourth $100,000.
The cash prizes aside, the winner and runner-up will be invited to participate in the KFC Invitational tournament, also coordinated by the Petra Organisation.
They will be joined by four other teams, two from overseas and two from the hinterland, Mendonca outlined.
