Umesh Ramkishun, a 43-year-old man, died on Friday night after he was struck down by a car being driven by a 47-year-old man on the Harlem Public road, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
Police Headquarters reported that the car, with number plate PZZ 9115, was driven by a 47-year-old resident of Sea View Anna Catherina, WCD. The driver was reportedly speeding in an attempt to take his son, who ingested poison, to the West Demerara Regional hospital.
While passing the Harlem Public road at about 19:15hrs, the driver struck down Ramkishun who was crossing the road from south to north in the company of another pedestrian.
As a result of the collision, Ramkishun fell onto the vehicle’s bonnet and windscreen; he sustained injuries to his head and body. His right foot was also severed.
Soon after, the man’s lifeless body was picked up by the police and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor who pronounced him dead.
The accident scene was reportedly visited at about 19:35hrs by police ranks.
The driver was arrested and a breathalyser test was conducted on him, but no trace of alcohol was found. Notice of intended prosecution was also served on the driver and statement taken.
The body is presently lying at Ezekiel Mortuary for storage, awaiting an autopsy
The driver is in custody assisting with the investigation.
I see this as an unfortunate incident for the driver if the vehicle. As a matter if fact, I empathize with him. In his anxiety to take his son to the hospital and in his haste to get to the institution, the accident occurred. I do hope that this matter would be treated with some clemency for the driver. However, my condolences go out to the relatives of Mr. Ramkishun,
