Two men arrested after ganja found in vehicle’s gas tank

Two men, a 36-year-old taxi driver and a 28-year-old fisherman, were arrested on Friday after they were nabbed with 17 grams of marijuana stashed in the gas tank of a vehicle.

According to a release from Police Headquarters, ranks were conducting a mobile patrol at Better Hope north, East Coast Demerara (ECD), at about 22:00hrs on Friday.

There, the officers saw a burgundy motorcar with the number plate PXX 8447 parked on the western side of an access road. The two men were seated inside the vehicle.

Both the taxi driver and the passenger were acting in a suspicious manner, police said. As such, a search was conducted on both persons. Nothing illegal was found.

Subsequently, a search was conducted on the motor car. Police found a black plastic bag containing a transparent bag with leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis in the vehicle’s gas tank compartment.

When the narcotics were found, the men were told of the allegation and cautioned. They both reportedly admitted ownership of the suspected cannabis.

Thereafter, they were arrested and taken to the Sparendaam Police Station with the suspected cannabis. The narcotics were weighed and it amounted to 17 grams; the drugs were then placed in a transparent evidence bag, sealed, marked and lodged in the general property book.

The two suspects were placed into custody pending charges.
