Deonarine Ramachandran, a 29-year-old man who lived at the Conservancy Dam, Canal #1 Polder, West Bank Demerara, died on Saturday night after he was stabbed by a 17-year-old boy during a fight.

Police Headquarters reported that Ramachandran and the 17-year-old boy were consuming alcohol at Ramachandran’s house at about 16:00hrs on Saturday, when the boy became intoxicated and started behaving disorderly.

It was also reported that the boy tried to harm himself, prompting Ramachandran’s intervention.

While attempting to stop the boy from harming himself, Ramachandra slapped him several times to “calm him down,” police said.

Soon after, the boy exited the premises but returned after arming himself with a cutlass. Ramchandran also, reportedly, armed himself with a cutlass and attempted to chop the boy. Again, the boy left the premises.

However, Ramachandran reportedly became annoyed and confronted the suspect. During the confrontation, the boy ran to his house nearby and called on his 58-year-old father.

A scuffle then ensued between Ramachandran and the 58-year-old man, during which the 17-year-old boy armed himself with a knife and dealt Ramachandran a stab to his abdomen, seriously injuring him.

Soon after, Ramachandran was picked up by relatives who escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

The body is presently at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s mortuary awaiting an autopsy.

Meanwhile, the boy and his father were apprehended by police officers and are assisting with ongoing investigations.

Alcohol, drunks and knives are not a good combo.

Let justice be served regardless if the lad’s age. He must be able to suffer the consequences if his own actions. In the meantime, my condolences go out to the relatives if Mr Ramchsrran. May his soul rest in peace
